Dear Friends and Family of HBC,
You might remember last Spring I encouraged you to watch a series called “The Chosen”. It is the story of Jesus and his choosing the twelve disciples to follow him in fulfilling his purpose. Since making this recommendation last May The Chosen has gained a lot of attention, especially with a Christmas special they released in theatres in December.
This show has picked up momentum and has caught the notice of many people; both believers and nonbelievers, church attenders and church avoiders. God is using this show to reach people and to renew hearts!
In the last several months a common theme I have heard around our church is “We want to reach new people. We want to connect with the community”. I cannot help but wonder if this is a result of our 2021 focus on “Recalibrate”. When we truly recalibrate and re-center ourselves in Christ, a desire grows within us to share.
Being aware of the popularity of The Chosen and the desire to reach our neighbors, starting January 9 I will be leading us through a sermon series based on the first season of this show. Each week will focus on a specific episode from season 1. It was my original intent to have us meet together mid-week for a simple dinner and then watch an episode together, but Covid put a stop to that. However, this is where you can do your part.
Perhaps (if you feel comfortable and safe to do so) you might invite some friends to watch the show with you in your own home. Have a discussion about it and then invite them to church with you to hear the sermon based on the episode for that week:

This is an opportunity to respond to the call we’ve sensed to reach others in our community. It starts with an invitation from you.

1) On your phone, go to the app store and search “The Chosen”. This is a free app you can download and you can begin watching it right away.
2) You can also watch it by going to this website: https://watch.angelstudios.com/thechosen
3) Visit YouTube.com and search for The Chosen Season 1. There you will find the episodes for each week.
4) Purchase the DVD.
It is a new year! A new year to leave the past behind and look forward. God is calling us to share the message, to invite others to come and see and each of us plays a part. After all, isn’t this What Disciples Do?
